چکیده

We demonstrate how combinatory molecular computation allows parallel selfassembly of several kinds of nanomembranes and nanotubes. One such nanomembrane is a square grid constructed of cross-linked horizontal and vertical chains. We show that a relatively minor change causes it to self-assemble into a nanotube with the same cross-linked structure. A second nanomembrane is a monolayer arranged in a hexagonal grid. 1 Cross-linked Membranes 1.1 General Grid Construction Our goal is to construct a nanomembrane structured as a cross-linked grid, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. One row of the grid is constructed by (Eq. 73 [Mac02a]): (1) This research is supported by Nanoscale Exploratory Research grant CCR-0210094 from the National Science Foundation. Universally Programmable Intelligent Matter ( Exploratory Research Proposal ) UPIM Report 1 Technical Report

Intelligent matter is any material in which individual molecules or supra-molecular clusters function as agents to accomplish some purpose. Intelligent matter may be solid, liquid or gaseous, although liquids and membranes are perhaps most typical. Universally programmable intelligent matter (UPIM) is made from a small set of molecular building blocks that are universal in the sense that they c...

Sensors , Patches , Pores , and Channels : Progress on Universally Programmable Intelligent Matter

This report presents several systematic techniques for constructing complex nanostructures. First, we define a general “patch format,” which allows membranes to be hierarchically and iteratively assembled from smaller elements. The usefulness of the technique is extended by demonstrating how such patches may be joined and transformed in various ways. Several membrane architectures, previously d...

Accomplishments and New Directions for 2004 : Progress on Universally Programmable Intelligent Matter

We summarize progress to date on “universally programmable intelligence matter” (the use of general-purpose autonomous molecular computation [AMC] for nanostructure synthesis and control), and on this basis discuss directions for future research. Accomplishments include an analysis of extensions to combinatory logic required for nanotechnology and an investigation (through simulation) of the as...

Universally Programmable Intelligent Matter Summary

We explain how a small set of molecular building blocks will allow the implementation of “universally programmable intelligent matter,” that is, matter whose structure, properties, and behavior can be programmed, quite literally, at the molecular level.
